There’s a change in our neighbourhood at this time of year. A shift to something quieter. Our gardens and the steep hillsides are thick and green and that may have a dampening effect on sound. And there are fewer girls around, the older ones having gone on study leave. But sound is not completely responsible for the change. It’s an emotional shift. We are waiting for summer, we have got out into our gardens to mow and weed, we have flung open the windows and aired the winter duvet (well, almost as we keep having cold snaps drift up from the south). I think we are all leaning towards holidays, for taking it easier. Certainly the junior girls who are left are going to class dawdle along, with less exuberance and anquish. They are more resigned. A long six weeks to a month of waiting before schools shut, workplaces go silly with Christmas lunches and then we all collapse in a heap and enjoy summer… which is definitely dawdling along too.
